Hi. My name is Dr. Brandon Lemuel. If you are not already aware, I am sure you will find out soon. We are in a "health" care crisis here in the United States. I say "health" care because it is not really "health" care but rather "sick" care. Here are three basic assumptions about "health" we make as a society today that have lead us to the "sick" care system. First, symptoms are the first sign a person is not healthy. Second, the body is never able to heal itself so we need to always see our doctor for some pill, potion or lotion for the symptom. If that does not work, then we will just remove the piece of the body that is causing our symptoms. The last assumption is the cause of the problem is found by exploring the symptoms.
Where have these assumptions lead us? Today, the United States spends 50% of all the money in the world spent on health care. Yet, the U.S. only comprises 7% of the world's population. That should mean that we are very healthy as a society. Unfortunately, the World Health Organization ranked the United States a disappointing 37th in the world!
Do you know the definition of insanity? Insanity is doing the exact same things over and over but expecting different results. There is a better way! Discover Wellness! In this book, Drs. Bob Hoffman and Jason Deitch explain that wellness is the path to seek on the high road to health. Einstein said, "You can never solve a problem with the same level of thinking that created it."
What is WELLNESS? Wellness is a proactive way to look at your health. Wellness is about taking 100% responsibility for the choices you make every day that lead you on the bright path to health or the dark path to disease. You may have heard that "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." Now, am I implying you will never get sick? Absolutely not. However, you can minimize your risks for disease and make it more likely you will be healthy. Lastly, wellness is about ALL areas of your life and the level of vitality in each one. The wellness areas of you life not only include health but, additionally, career, family, spirituality, finances, your environmental organization, intimacy, relationships, learning/growth and play/fun. Ultimately, the key to wellness is balance.
I am in agreement with what Dr. Eric Plasker, author of The 100 Year Lifestyle and wellness expert, has to say. In his book, Dr. Plasker shows how more people are living to 100 years and beyond. Here are your choices so you do not end up at 100 years old crippled, broke or alone.
SELF CARE -------> HEALTH CARE -------> SICK CARE
If I may, I am going to use an analogy to explain these models of care by comparing it to the dental profession. I am sure you have been to a dentist before so this will work perfect. Self Care is the flossing and brushing of your teeth. This action is the preventative measure you can take to achieve wellness. Next is Health Care. This is your bi-annual appointment for a preventative check-up done by the professional. Lastly, Sick Care would be waiting until symptoms show up in your life to seek care. Now, you are in need of a filling, a root canal or some other major procedure. Ultimately, this will cost you more time, money and energy in the long run. Can you see how wellness becomes a better choice you make on a daily basis?
